Whatever happened to service?

What the hell ever happened to good old fashioned service?
These days you provide the service to yourself AND pay for the privilege!

ATM’s were meant to provide efficient, quick banking for the person in a hurry, for only a little more than you were already paying.
Hell yes said everyone!! Gimme some of that!!
All it allowed them to do was cut staff, close branches and then they raised the fees anyway. Try and get hold of a person in a bank these days? Nope.
Take a number and someone will be with you shortly.
Small piece of advise here. If you go before noon take a cut lunch cos you’re going to be awfully hungry by the time they get to to you!

Service stations.
Not any more.
We’ll give you self serve pumps and that will allow us to cut the cost of fuel.
We’ll save you hundreds of dollars a year.
No more weekend penalty rates for 3 or 4 staff, we can do it with only one.
What they omitted to tell us was noone informed the oil producers they were meant to be co-operating in this supposed money saving exercise.
Nowadays you’re paying more than ever for fuel, plus washing your own windscreen, and checking your own oil and tyres.

Furniture.
No more can you go in, wander around and select what you want then have it delivered the next day.
No, no, no my friend!
Pick up the box, go to the checkout, pay on your way out and spend a week trying to work out the damned destructions.
Assuming they’re in English of course and you don’t have to ring the interpreters line to work out what the hell it’s saying!
Sometimes you may get lucky and have pictures though.
No problem. Uncle Henry has an engineers degree, he’ll sort it for you in no time!

Supermarkets. Whatever happened to one ringing the groceries up while there was another bagging them as they were pushed through?
These days you’re lucky to get a bag because if you only have a few items you have to ask for a bag. In some places over here, if you want a bag for the goods you bought with YOUR money in THEIR store, they charge you!
That’s right.
So not only do you get ripped off in the prices, you have to pay for the right to get them home without having to juggle the goods you purchased.
Am I the only one sees a small anomaly here?

The absolute icing on the cake for me though, is the Post Office.
I can remember, and not too long ago, where you could take your mail in and any associated paperwork was completed by the person behind the counter.
These people do it all day everyday and know it back to front anyway.
Any mail you had was sorted by them and put into the appropriate bag for distribution to whatever area it was going.
Well, I guess it was a bit unrealistic to expect the same service in this self serve world I guess. Nowadays, well here in Oz anyway, you have to not only SORT the mail into little bundles yourself, you have to make sure they’re in local and non local bundles, and (wait for it) numerical by post code!
No more than 25 in a bundle either.
If you have 26, you’re made remove on from the offending bundle! They won’t even do that anymore.
Send an item overseas? Holy shit, there’s more paperwork to be done than when you get married.
Customs declaration, name and address of sender, drivers licence number, plus photo copy of aforementioned licence.
Then comes the HUGE box provided for a description of the items in the parcel. Man if it was any smaller you’d be lucky to see it!
You have to do all this yourself, not one little offer of help, and if you ask for help?
Good heavens, it’s like you’re telling them you want one of their kidneys!
You almost have to promise the next child born into your family will be named after them!

I for one am sick to death of being made feel like a second class citizen when in fact I’m the customer!
I’m sick of feeling like I’m disturbing a shop assistant’s day by asking for help in THEIR store. When are businesses going to realise that customers pay their wages.
Without us they don’t have a job.
I think it’s time people like you and I started getting vocal about this and demanding something better.
Prices we can do little about. I’ll admit we’re pretty screwed there, but the service? Not good enough for me!
NOT near good enough.
I’m sick to death of paying for full service and having self serve everywhere!
