The reason for the season

Posted by anonymum on December 4, 2006

I LOVE Christmas. Love everything about it.
The shops, the decorations, the lights, the carols and the buying present thing.
I love GIVING presents, and appreciate receiving, but truth be known I prefer to give. I love to see the look on someones face when they open their parcel to find just the “right” present. I will go to extraordinary lengths to find that “right” present too, will look everywhere I can think of and then start on the net if I can’t find in normal ways.
What I don’t like is the way in which the retail trade has turned this celebration into a money making excercise, as they have with every other thing they can think of. In fact I object to it strongly.
For this reason I try and find presents that mean something to someone as opposed to some high priced piece of crap that will last 2 minutes.
Now I’m not a religious person by nature.
The reasons are many and varied and I won’t go into them but I do have a set of beliefs that are nothing like conventional.
Whilst I love the season I always try and remember WHY we have Christmas, regardless of my beliefs.
That’s the purpose of this post.
As a gentle reminder to myself that Christmas is not just about presents, whether they be given or received, or about stuffing ourselves stupid with food, or high priced holidays. It’s about a birth and family and a whole lot more.
I always try and give at least one pressie to someone less fortunate than myself, and it’s always for a child. For a few years I’ve been thinking about donating some time on Christmas day to a shelter that feed those who need feeding the most. Where we live there aren’t a lot of those types of places and those we do have are so badly corrupt i object to being part of it so I’ll probably just donate another gift for another child. In fact I might donate 4. I have 4 grand children, so one for each could be a good idea.
There will be posts in the coming couple of weeks about Santa and all those things, I just wanted to do this one first.
